Recap of the CESS Linux Workshop – A Step into the Open-Source World

The Computer Electronic and Software Society (CESS) successfully hosted an intensive four-day Linux Workshop aimed at introducing students to the fundamentals of open-source operating systems and command-line proficiency. Held from 17th to 21st January 2025, in the Mingde Building room N119, the workshop provided participants with a practical, hands-on introduction to Linux, which is an essential skill for any aspiring technologist, particularly those specializing in artificial intelligence and software development.

Led by a team of experienced CESS members, including Kabil Abderrahim, Sandio Djimeli Julio Armel, Jumashev Uzakberdi, Farea Ibrahim Khaled Qasem, and Barmon Chandra Deb, the workshop guided students through the core concepts of system architecture, file management, and automation. Each session was carefully structured to build upon the previous day's learning, ensuring a progressive and comprehensive experience.

DAY 1 & 2

Day 1 laid the foundation with an overview of system architecture, CLI environment setup, and file system navigation. Students learnt how to traverse directories, understand file paths and interact with the terminal, which are skills that form the backbone of Linux proficiency.

Day 2 focused on file management and text editing using Nano, alongside a deep dive into file permissions. Participants mastered the chmod command, learning how to make files executable and control access, which is an essential step toward writing and running scripts.

DAY 3 & 4

Day 3 introduced students to fetching files from the web using wget, executing shell scripts, and performing system-level installations via the apt package manager. These practical skills empowered students to begin building and managing their own Linux environments.

Day 4 concluded the series with a focus on Python environment management. Students explored the differences between pip and conda, learnt how to create and manage virtual environments, and automated setup processes using Bash scripts _effectively bridging the gap between system administration and development workflows.

Throughout the workshop, students were required to bring their own laptops, ensuring active participation and real-time learning. The interactive format allowed attendees to follow the session closely, troubleshoot alongside instructors, and leave with a fully functional Linux setup tailored to their needs.

The Linux Workshop not only equipped students with foundational technical skills but also opened the door to the vast world of open-source development. From AI research to embedded systems, Linux remains a critical tool in the modern tech landscape, and CESS is proud to have offered this opportunity for hands-on learning.
