Python

When the admissions email for the Bachelor of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS) quietly arrived, Lin remained outwardly composed, but the unmistakable gleam in his eyes told a different story. Immediately after, the offer for the same programme from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) followed.
He is the first student from NBH International Division to receive offers in Computer Science from both top-tier universities in Singapore.
Three years ago, no one could have imagined that this young man, who knew only a smattering of Python and grew nervous at the mere thought of speaking English, would achieve what he has today. Yet, if you follow his journey over these three years, you will come to understand that some remarkable turnarounds show signs of coming from the very beginning.

01

Upon entering high school, Lin’s academic record was impressive: he ranked 20th out of 300 in his cohort, consistently placed in the top ten in mathematics and physics, and exhibited exceptional logical reasoning—recognised by his teachers as a top science student. From an early age, he had a pure interest in computers, and during middle school he taught himself a bit of Python, enough to tinker with simple programmes.
Beyond that, however, his understanding of computer science was almost a blank slate—he had no real idea what the discipline entailed, nor had he participated in any competitions or projects. English was an even greater source of difficulty. His first IELTS mock test yielded only 6.0; listening felt like hearing through a fog, and speaking was particularly strenuous. Introverted and quiet by nature, he rarely spoke up; having to speak English made him blush deeply, and his pronunciation was halting and laboured.
Despite his evident strengths, he always kept himself out of the spotlight. He would be the first to shy away from opportunities to share learning experiences or present project outcomes. As for applying to Singapore, he was utterly lost, having only vaguely heard that “computer science is a good programme”. He wanted to aim for it, but saw no clear path forward—and even worried that his poor communication skills would prove a fatal weakness.

In the first semester of Grade 10, our admissions team conducted an in‑depth analysis of his profile. We recognised that this young man lacked neither talent nor passion; what he missed was a roadmap that could connect all his latent potential.
Thus, together with him, we set his sights on the Computer Science programmes at NUS and NTU, and devised a three‑dimensional improvement plan encompassing academics, competitions, language proficiency, and holistic competencies. The strategy was not simply to remedy weaknesses, but to amplify his strengths while rendering his weaknesses non‑crippling.

The first priority was a systematic upgrade of his programming skills. His computer science teacher laid out a clear progression path: starting with advanced Python, then gradually extending to C++ and Java. Twice‑weekly one‑on‑one tutoring helped him tackle the most challenging concepts, while supplementary online courses broadened his horizons.
Many nights found him alone in the study room, lines of code flickering on the screen, revising and debugging until late into the night. He failed many times, yet he was back in the computer lab early the next day. Gradually, he developed an engineer’s rigour and resilience.
Knowing how to write code was not enough. We encouraged him to join the school’s computer science club, starting as an ordinary member and learning to participate in project development. His teacher guided him step‑by‑step on how to structure project ideas and how to communicate and divide tasks with partners. Initially reserved, he later took the lead in developing a “campus grade inquiry mini‑programme”,from requirements analysis and programme design to final deployment, he was hands‑on every step of the way. He needed to collaborate with club members and repeatedly clarify requirements with school staff. Unknowingly, he began to speak up voluntarily, his articulation grew clearer, and for the first time he experienced the joy of teamwork.
To strengthen his academic credentials, we helped him register for the National Olympiad in Informatics in Provinces (NOIP). The competition coach accompanied him throughout, consolidating his knowledge framework, walking him through past year problems one by one, simulating real contest environments, and relentlessly honing his weak points.
During that period, he pushed himself to the limit, devoting an extra ten hours each day to preparation, using the most basic yet solid method of thoroughly digesting every concept. In the end, he brought home a first‑prize award at the provincial level. This substantial certificate later became a key credential that helped him gain admission to Singapore’s prestigious universities.
His English improvement was likewise a gradual process of painstaking refinement. His English teacher designed daily deliberate practice: one hour of listening every day, working with authentic test materials and broadcasts, doing sentence‑by‑sentence dictation, and grinding through every unclear syllable; thirty minutes of speaking daily, starting from the simplest self‑introduction and slowly progressing to topic‑based conversations.
The teacher practised speaking with him almost every day, correcting pronunciation one sound at a time, fixing grammatical errors one by one, and—more importantly—repeatedly telling him, “It’s okay to make mistakes; just speak up boldly.” By Grade 11, his IELTS score rose to 7.0, and by Grade 12 it stabilised at 7.5, with no subsection below 6.5. The young man who once tensed up at speaking could now fluently recount his project stories in English.
The application season of Grade 12 brought the real challenge. Singaporean institutions evaluate not only academic records but also the candidate’s articulation and critical thinking during interviews. We helped him carefully craft his application essays, highlighting his programming ability, competition experience, and project practice. At the same time, we conducted intensive mock interviews—recreating authentic interview settings, compiling high‑frequency questions, from “Why computer science?” to “What difficulties did you encounter in your projects, and how did you solve them?”—and rehearsed his responses repeatedly.
We trained not just the content but also his communication habits and impromptu responsiveness. Gradually, he became able to present his academic strengths in a well‑structured manner, telling stories of writing code and working on projects with a smile. The teenager who once refused even to share on stage finally gained the confidence to stand in the spotlight.

When the admission letter from NUS arrived, Lin merely gave his usual composed smile and then said to us, “Thank you, teachers, for helping me achieve my goal.”
In that moment, everything we had invested in those three years became worthwhile.
He ultimately secured the undergraduate offer in Computer Science from NUS, Asia’s top‑ranked comprehensive university, as well as the undergraduate offer in Computer Science from NTU. His story confirms one truth: interest is not a fleeting fondness. When combined with a scientific plan, persistent effort, and warm support, it can genuinely fuel a remarkable turnaround.
What delights us even more is that he is no longer the introverted and inarticulate science student he once was. He has learned to collaborate, to express himself, and has cultivated a rigorous academic attitude and poised communication skills. These attributes are even more precious than an offer letter, and they will accompany him far into the future.
